PETITIONING FOR RECLASSIFICATION TO IN-STATE FOR FEE PAYING PURPOSES

Have you been coded as an out of state student for tuition paying purposes?  Do you feel that you meet the requirements for reclassification for in-state fees? If you can answer “YES” to the questions listed below, you may be eligible.  Keep reading to find out more!

Basically, to qualify, you or your parent or your US court approved legal guardian (legal guardianship must be approved through a US court and cannot be granted for students aged 18 or older) must be able to answer “YES” to the following questions:

1.  You, your parent or your US court-appointed legal guardians are US citizens, permanent residents, refugees or asylees in the United States

2.  You, your parent or your US court-appointed legal guardians have resided in the State of Georgia for one full year and can provide proof of the residence for one 12 full months immediately preceding the term for which you are seeking to be classified as an in-state student for tuition purposes

3.  You, your parent or your US court-appointed legal guardian have filed a US Federal Income Tax return for the most recent tax year showing earnings of at least $13000.00 USD

4.  You, your parent or your US court-appointed legal guardian, have filed a GA Income Tax return for the most recent tax year showing earnings of at least $13000.00 USD

5.  You, your parent or your US court-appointed legal guardians have worked in the State of Georgia for at least one year and can provide proof of the employment for one 12 full months immediately preceding the term for which you are seeking to be classified as an in-state student for tuition purposes

6.  You can provide proof of the relationship to your parent or US court-appointed legal guardian with either a birth certificate or approved US court guardianship

NOW THAT YOU’VE REVIEWED THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS,
 PLEASE READ ON TO DETERMINE WHICH CATEGORY MAY APPLY TO YOU!

If you answered “YES” to the questions above and you graduated from a Georgia High School within the last five years, you may be eligible to complete a RESIDENCY ADJUSTMENT and should click the link to the left of this page for the Residency Adjustment Checklist.

If you answered “YES” to the questions above and you are aged 23 or younger but did not graduate from a Georgia High School or graduated a Georgia High School more than 5 years ago, you would be considered a DEPENDENT student and should click the link to the left of this page for the Dependent Student Checklist.

If you answered “YES” to the questions above and you are 24 or older, you would be considered an INDEPENDENT.   Click the link to the left of this page for the Independent Student Checklist.

If you were unable to answer “YES” to all the questions above, but are married to someone who can, you may be eligible for a NON RESIDENT WAIVER.

If you answered “YES” to the questions above, and are aged 23 or younger now but not claimed as a dependent on your parent’s most recent tax return, you may still be eligible for a NON RESIDENT WAIVER.

If you were unable to answer “YES”  to the immigration status question above, but you, your parent, your US court-appointed legal guardian or your spouse are current holders of E, H, I, L, O, P, R or TN visa status and have taken the first steps toward obtaining permanent residence in the US, then you may be eligible for an ECONOMIC ADVANTAGE WAIVER provided that you, your parent, your US court-appointed legal guardian or spouse can answer yes to all other questions listed above.  PROCESSING TIMES

Processing times vary and are heavily dependent upon the amount of applications being reviewed.  Please allow 7-10 business days for review.  If you have not received a letter from us and need to check the status of you petition application, please e-mail us at gpc.residency@gpc.edu.  Submit your petition early and receive quicker processing.  Please know that while we try very hard to give detailed checklists of all required documentation, because of the complex nature of some applications, you may be required to submit additional documentation not listed on the petition application or on your detailed checklist. 

DEADLINES

Petition applications and all supporting documents must be received within 30 days of the first day of class for the semester you wish to receive in-state fees.  This means if the semester begins on 08/17/201 (example only), you have until 09/17/2012 (example only) to submit all required documentation.  Petition applications and/or documents received after the first 30 days of class will be reviewed for the subsequent semester.
